Powerline over WiFi / WiMax
Overview
VELCHIP PowerWireless solutions, uses a combination of two very powerful technologies: Broadband over Powerline (BPL) and Power WiFi/ WiMax.
The parallel use of wireless and BPL provides significant benefits to customers. Using standard WiFi for distribution of broadband services into the client's home or business provides the best cost per home passed in the industry.
It offers the service provider tremendous flexibility and scalability from day one. The service can be deployed even with one customer only and grow from there. There is no need for dedicated CPE installations at the customer premise, thereby simplifying the deployment process in addition to gaining significant cost and labor savings. The cost of deploying a network is flat; adding customers later increases top line revenue, without incurring any additional CAPEX and OPEX costs. This solution is not the case with any other solution BPL offering where dedicated LV CPE equipment is required.
Another benefit is the elimination of an MV to LV transition. With other BPL solutions there is a need to deploy a unit at every transformer. In comparison, with VELCHIP PowerWireless, there is no need to do any of that. The new customers are served from the same WiFi/ WiMax access point that serves the first customer.
VELCHIP® PowerWireless provides an air gap that is a natural barrier protecting customers in case of unexpected failures. The demarcation point between the utility and the home owner is kept outside of the home, stopping at the transformer on the last pole. With VELCHIP PowerWireless, the utility's liability remains the same as it was before deploying a BPL network.
VELCHIP® PowerWireless also uses these solutions as a failover mechanism, to insure data delivery in cases of temporary interference on the MV line. The seamless switchover between powerline and wireless hops is hitless and transparent to the user. This capability is unique to VELCHIP® ’s product and guarantees service continuity at all times.
VELCHIP® 's use of PowerWireless can easily create an expandable network of WiFi hotspots that cover cell areas of 700 feet around every pole. While BPL is used as the backbone of the last mile access, PowerWireless units can be deployed anywhere in the network to increase the total coverage area in any direction.
